"Members at Large"
By Daniel Jacob
January 2011
We've been having some interesting conversations over at Club Recon (our Discussion List in the Reconnections Community) about what I like to call “Members-at-Large.” These are folks whose life journey has been punctuated by dealing with what one List Member calls “The Fat Suit.” Having dealt with this issue all my life—since I was very young—this discussion immediately produced some resonance within me. I have a feeling it will do the same for many of you.
Since our Recon Forum is a place where people can come and share their minds openly, freely… without danger of being jumped on, or debated, I welcomed the subject and all the experiences expressed. Apparently, I am not alone in my quest for insight concerning this life situation.
Weight Gain is definitely one of the “symptoms” for that condition I have nicknamed “Global Acceleration Syndrome” (G.A.S.!!!). It’s one of the most rapidly expanding (pardon the pun) sectors of human experience in the U.S. today. If the Health Industry was not so wrapped up in making BILLIONS OF DOLLARS from the diagnosis and treatment of “obesity,” they might notice that very little of what they’re selling seems to LAST for many of their patients.
Many of us have been languishing, for years… with the sense of "difference" we experience because of body size. For that reason, I’m going to be using this series to start a sector on this site called "Members at Large"… dealing with the challenges brought on by being "People of Dimension." Even those who don't carry much in the way of "extra poundage," can become obsessed, night and day, by the size and shape of their bodies. The flip side of Compulsive Overeating is a condition known as Anorexia Nervosa. And the root of both conditions seem intertwined—deep in the heart of a person's consciousness.
In Ascension-Based Circles, where we spend a lot of time talking about “unconditional love," there is still a sense of urgency felt about "releasing" those extra pounds—rather than looking for the underlying reasons why they might have formed on our body in the first place. In this series, I'd like to do just that.
It often seems that only people who have taken off their "extra weight” get a decent hearing on the subject. Anyone who hasn't gets scolded for trying to rationalize staying the way they are, rather than healing. I have no doubt that HEALING is in order when it comes to this. I'm just not sure that the most prescribed method (just eat less, move more) is always the root of the issue. If it was, why is this (supposed) "problem" growing by leaps and bounds throughout America (and many parts of the world)?
It seems that short term "wins" (such as we find by watching "The Greatest Loser" TV show)… fade in time… after the enthusiasm of change and "thinness" begins to fade. Not for EVERYONE. And that's the kicker, isn't it? SOME FOLKS DO "win for losing"… while many more do not. And when someone "wins," what are we talking about? Usually it has to do with diving, head first, into RELATIONSHIPS (I'm thinking of Carney Wilson right now, and her life after she had her bariatric surgery)
Even though RELATIONSHIPS are wonderful… grounding and warming when they begin… they can end up being quite distracting down the road—tending to draw a person's attention away from what's going on in the Core Self. Before you know it, a "fantasy romance" can become a "gruesome twosome"… .turning the anticipation of joy to regret. What happens then? On come the pounds again, plus some.
Once again, it bears noting that what I am describing does not represent ALL the endgames for weight loss and romance. The amount of "successful joinings" (or the appearance of same) always seems sufficient to keep the "Weight Loss Mills" grinding out new pills, workout programs, and fitness techniques. So be it. If it works, don't fix it. But if it doesn't—we may want to take a hard second look at the whole mindset which dominates the weight-loss scene.
What I'm saying here goes hand-in-hand with what the Guides have said about ALL common symptoms of Global Acceleration Syndrome. "If you can get the help you desire, simply by visiting a certain doctor—or by doing some sort of therapy or physical discipline… DO IT!" But if nothing can be found to alleviate the condition you're in… by all means don't judge yourself!" And pay special attention! Be patient. There's a lot more to what is going on in life than meets the eye. Especially NOW.

I'm convinced that, some day… we'll all know the CORE of this weight issue… and it will be just a tad more than "eat less, move more," (not that there is anything wrong with that advice). There is SOMETHING MORE to realize here… and I certainly mean to FIND OUT what that is...before I leave this 3D format!
We've been speaking about KARMA on my Facebook page recently. And I now realize that being a "Member at Large" is one of my "Karmic Challenges" this time around.… because of my innate judgment around "lack of discipline" when I notice it in myself, or in the lives of those around me. I have remembrance of myself as being "thin" in other life constructs… and giving lots of SH*T to those who did not conform to my idea of "beauty" or "health." And trust me… these "High Priests of Normal" in the Health Care Community have done a darn good job replacing the word "evil" with the word "unhealthy.” Deep down, it's really all the same thing… JUDGMENT. And I did it (and still do it) as much as the next guy!
Those who are concerned about this issue are encouraged to write me with your story and your comments. Please tell me if you DON'T want them included in the "Discussion Page," or if you'd like to be anonymous.
I am beginning this sector on the site soon. After all… "going on a diet" is just about #1 on people's list of "New Fears Resolutions" isn't it?… and there's lots of pain around it, too! We've been having lively conversations, as I'm sure you'll provide as well.
No advice though, please! Just experience. And imagination. And EXPANDED PERSPECTIVE, eh? If it's be said a thousand times on an infomercial—we won't want to repeat it here.
