We are entering eclipse season, our twice-yearly foray into the expansive energies associated with precise alignments of the Sun, Moon and Earth.
Physically, an eclipse occurs when the orbital paths of the three orbs are aligned so exactly that instead of having a regular New or Full Moon, we experience a Solar or Lunar Eclipse. Astrologically, an eclipse is defined as a time when a New or Full Moon occurs within a certain range of the Moon's Nodes.
Eclipses always occur at least in pairs (sometimes in threes) every six months, with one eclipse emphasizing the North Node and the other the South Node. Metaphysically, this means that we are addressing issues of both enhanced growth (North Node) and karmic resolution (South Node). Every eclipse season we are nudged further along on our path of growth, while at the same time being asked to release something of the past which we have outgrown.
The Leo Solar Eclipse is not until August 1, but we are already within range of its influence. And, although this first eclipse is a New Moon, which usually is associated with beginnings, it is aligned with the South Node. This indicates a time karmic completion and release before we can step fully into the energy of the new.
For all of us, this means we are clearing the decks related to Leo themes, in preparation for making important advancements. In general, we are being asked to leave behind the negative manifestations of Leo: egocentricity, overdramatization, childish insistence on having our own way, and attachment to attention, approval and applause.
In fact, we could probably all benefit from watching "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" again. The behaviors of most of the children as they tour the factory are quintessentially lower-vibrational Leo, while our hero Charlie displays many positive Leo traits.
Hopefully we're not quite as childish in our demands as the Blueberry Girl, but as we focus on releasing the lower side of Leo, it might help to see how some of those traits look when exaggerated. Plus, laughter can be great medicine, especially if we can detach enough from our egos to laugh at ourselves.
On more personal levels, the house in our birth charts where this Solar Eclipse occurs (at 10 degrees Leo) can provide clues as to where each of us individually is being encouraged to leave behind old behaviors and attitudes, and develop new, more creative means of finding fulfillment.
The second eclipse this summer, the Aquarius Lunar Eclipse, will occur on August 16. With this eclipse, we incorporate the awareness of a Full Moon with the imperative for expansion associated with the North Node.
We will explore each of these eclipses in greater depth during the weeks that they are exact. But for now, it is helpful to realize the importance of this period overall --and to consider current life events within this greater context of karmic resolution and completion occurring prior to awareness and growth.
This week, a Uranus-Mercury trine on Wednesday offers an opportunity to align ourselves more consciously with a higher perspective. Uranus in Pisces teaches us the importance letting go of control and stepping into the energy of allowing; Mercury in Cancer helps us think more sensitively about ourselves and others, and encourages nurturing as a solution to problems.
With both planets in water signs, neither one encourages much reliance on facts and figures. So, we expect that the higher perspective gained this week has more to do with feelings and intuition than on rational concerns.
Concrete action is more likely toward week's end, as Jupiter and Mars form a trine in earth signs. In fact, an Earth Grand Trine is briefly formed early Saturday morning (PDT) with the Moon in Taurus, Jupiter in Capricorn and Mars in Virgo.
This grand trine should be a stabilizing influence, helping us feel more grounded in the midst of ongoing changes and energy shifts. Throughout the weekend, we may feel more inspired to be physically active, and to find ways to enjoy ourselves at the same time.
Personal Note: My heart-felt thank you to everyone who wrote to express your sentiments on the passing of my father last week. It is so helpful to feel your supportive hands at this time. Blessings to you all.
