Hi Everyone!!!
I might be moving to upstate NY and wondered if anyone here lives there or knows anything about the area.
I'd be going somewhere to the Hudson Valley. Unfortuneately it is incredibly expensive and am looking for a community of like minded folks (like my mind too ;D) where I can afford to live comfortably in a nice house...3 bedrooms with some land. I want to live near a place where there are people with some money but not so near I become overwhelmed. I'd like to find a place where I can be sorta on the fringes and live a tiny bit more in a ruarl area but not so isolated I have to share dinner with the bears. A medium side town or small city with a really good healthfood store where I can by organic produce and meats, a great pet store where I can get the good foods I am used to for my boo boos; where I can meet people I can relate to that are interesting and sincere but not so far out I have to throw then a line to come on down.
If you know of anywhere like this, please let me know asap. I'm going to plan to go up to visit the area around mid sept. and want to refine my visit so i am not spinning everywhere. Also If you life up there or know someone I would Love a name and phone number as I don't know a soul in the area.
OK, let me know. ;D Love, WQ

Hey WQ! I lived in Upstate NY for 12 years. Just moved down here to NC in 2000 from Schenectady, NY, actually. That's the area I lived in, tri-city Capital area - Albany, Schenectady, Troy. From what you mentioned as desires, though, I don't think I'd recommend those areas. Woodstock (yes, the infamous one) is somewhat like the kind of place you mention, though it has not just a few throw backs to an earlier hippie type, I suppose. Beautiful area, though, too. Smallish community, whole foods/holistic focus, all that. I know a few musicians in that area with studios, and a number of artists. Pet friendliness throughout the entire region, as far as I experienced, and definitely more of a cat region than a dog one, it seemed to me. *heehee* Down here it seems more dog-focused. How does that work, I wonder? Kingston and Poughkeepsie might be places to look. I had a friend who lived in Kingston in a beautiful area, real nice community, lots of nature. The entire Hudson Valley area is wonderful, and all along the Hudson River, really. There tends to be "city or rural", though, and not so many mid-level communities. Well, maybe I'm not the best assessor of that, really. I knew Manhattan as "the" city growing up, and haven't met another city since, really. So everything seems "town-like" to me, or rural. Eh... I'm rambling here. LOL! But you know what? Right in the city of Albany there was a wonderful community I lived among when I was a student, in the first years I lived there. And each city seems to have some sort of community theatre in their main park, which is a great place to meet folks - almost every night in summer, and then music shows on weekends, festivals throughout the year. More community-oriented than where I grew up, I'll tell ya! LOL! The whole mid-Upstate area was developing like wildfire - in some not-so-good ways, imo - around when I left. One of the rural towns I lived in north of the tri-city area in the early 90's became a mall-mecca by the time I left Upstate in 2000. I never spent time more north, though, so I can't speak to that area at all. I wish I had more details for you, but just like here, I tend to stay indoors more than most, and didn't make use of much community myself, I didn't really seek it out. I have a girlfriend still living in Schenectady and she has a wonderful network of all you mentioned, but it's scattered about, not centrally located anywhere. But she gets out more and networks more, so she found what she needed, you know? It's all real do-able there, though, that's for sure. And the scenary is just beautiful, much like where you are now in some places. Despite my many years there, perhaps someone else has more useful input for you.

Hi WhiteQueen
I was in Albany , NY three months ago. I lived there for a month. I live in a small town in a new development surburb... (pop was about 7K). Things were pretty quiet there and people are nice there and some are conservative (bush lovers). Thats all i could tell you. Oh winter and snow is nasty there. Much worser than in Ohio.
Synastasia.
