Hi all, I am looking for as much information about Maine as possible. I am considering moving and that has come up on the radar. Not sure where, and that's why I am inquiring. Do any of you know anything about ME? Great and beautiful places to live? Priced resonably? Gotta have an alternative community and a great healthfood store with organic meat and produce depts? Gotta have a community where a woo woo like me will fit in, but not so over stocked like Asheville where there are too many of us and no chance for business.
I heard Portland was nice and also Bangor.
Please share what you know.
Thanks. WQ

Hi White Q,
There are 2 things to keep in mind about maine.
1. It is cold, and very snowy in the winter.
2. The population of Maine triples(prolly a low estimate) in the summer months.
Certain areas of Maine are less expensive than others, but, the least expensive are usually the least accessible, or desireable(in terms of tourism). One of the more 'hip' communities is Bar Harbor, which is on Mount Desert Island(Acadia National Park), but I hear it's quite expensive. Another possibility would be Freeport, the outlet store capital of the Northeast, and home to L.L. Bean(Anywhere along Rt. 1 between 95 and Freeport would draw a lot of traffic passing by).
The tourism breaks down to most heading towards the seacoast of Maine(Cheap Lobster, Rocky Beaches, Great Views, and in some cases, sunset over the atlantic), and a bit less heading to the plethora of clean, clear freshwater lakes of the interior and the mountains.
As you get farther up into Maine, there are no longer towns, for the most part, as the land is divided up via a grid system, T3 R9 would specify a town sized chunk of wilderness or logging forest. That's the cheapest land, but due to remoteness is more suited to a conclave buying a whole township and founding a sustainable community than a business type person who needs at least partial access to the outside world.
Although some areas of Maine are more 'hip' than others, there is still a large population of inbred whites who fear A. Change, and B. Everything else. Take this with a grain of salt, because most likely it is this way in most of 'Bush's' America.
Given the thought that if I were to choose to set up a business, where would I go in Maine, I would most definately focus on summer tourism as my food source, and have an internet backup for the lean winter months(although there is skiing and wintersports)...
My recommendation would be to search around on the internet for summer tourism hotspots in maine, and then check out roadmaps(most tourists come up 95 from Massachusetts(NY, NJ, DE, CN, RI, MA, PA, OH...)) and set up somewhere where the volume of cars heading for the most prized destinations is highest, and setup near there... After all, when I've been stuck at a drawbridge on coastal rt 1, I couldn't help but look around at the quaint little business district around me.
Hope this gets your gears turning,
Pig in the Pen

I liked Portland, ME a lot when I was there for work in the late '80's. Good little music clubs and restaurants. Most of my shopping was for movie props and building materials, tho, not food. Down at the ferry dock, there was a really good seafood place. I also lived and worked on Cliff Island, the last island the ferryboat from Portland went to (in Casco Bay). I went shopping in Freeport, 20 min from Portland at LL Bean and outlet stores, Anne Klein, Bass, etc. I do remember the pipes starting to freeze in September, but it was beautiful.

Thank you Pig pen for keeping me laughing even after I finished reading about the YUMMY recepies of the 50's and the 70's.
Thank you also for reminding me that the local folk in Maine are really transplanted Southern mountain men and women.
Thank you Annarita for reminding me about the pipes freezing in early Sept.
Please God let the relocation astrologer find me another place.
Cripes there is no where to go on this planet any more. Ahhh for the good old days.

Hey WQ, How about using a pendant to signal out the place? Or just ask your guides to give you a hint...you will be surprised how a name of a state keeps coming up ...like the angels are giving you a hint. When I was to return to USA I asked to what state I should go besides New York where I am from. And Florida kept coming up in conversatiions, news, magazines, etc....that helped my decide , and here I am loving Florida all the way. I can't see myself living somewhere else thou I have had urges to move out of Florida, but something keeps holding me back so I guess my work is here.

Mirra, I am so clouded these days with worry and concern I can't seem to get my barings. I have hired sevearl relocation astrologers and am going to spend the money and have them all do my chart and hope there is some consensus. Crossing fingers. Not even sure if I am going to move. I have to look at it tho' based on what is going on in my life. WQ

((((Hiya WQ)))) I wasn't going to bother mentioning this because it seems such a little thing, but it keeps popping up every single time I come past this thread, so I'm SAYING it! LOL! Have you thought at all about Vermont? For whatever reason, every time I see "Maine" in your writing, I get this sense of "no, not Maine. Vermont". LOL! May have nothing to do with you, of course, but I've shared. I've been to Vermont and it's just lovely, though it too has a cold season that can really take a toll. Well there. Now I've said it maybe it will stop popping in as much. LOL!

[glow=blue,2,300]If you like warm weather and no humidity, come to New Mexico!
It also seems to be one of the least populated states. Maybe a million? And it's bigger than England!

I'd love to hear about NM Jenn as I think it might hold some promise. Never Albecurkey tho'.
And about VT too. Where were you Sowleu?

Well, I've been many places in the state - Bennington, Wilmington, Stowe - but I particularly recall a lovely weekend in Manchester, with Steve (roommate) in fact, when we dated. Just beautiful.
I also used to live in MA for about a year, and spent many weekends in New Hampshire, which I also enjoyed. I worked in Nashua for a bit, in fact. Again though, the winters in those northeastern states is not my cup of tea anymore. Born and raised in NY you'd think I'd feel them as normal, but no. I prefer the warmer climates.

[glow=blue,2,A]LMAO! Ah yes, "The Taos Humm" ::giggle::
And don't forget "The Los Alamos Glow!" Haha!
I have actually never been to Taos, so I have never heard it. It seems to me to be some kind of urban legend though. ::giggle:: Conspiracy theorists say it's the department of defense or the military contacting submarines. LMAO! There is NO WATER anywhere near NM.
Others say "more enlightened" people hear it while others don't. Supposedly some do and some don't hear it.
Some claim to get sick by it with headache, dizziness, nausea, etc. There has been extensive research to try and detect different vibrational frequencies there and none have been found.
Personally, I think it was a tourist propaganda, that the residents internalized and made "real."
The Los Alamos Glow is this huge, phenomenal glow you see if you drive up the mountain to Los Alamos at night - it's really just a few lights, but the joke is that it's radioactive from the atomic/nuclear weapons that are made there.
Since I grew up in there, I blame my "glowing" white comlection on the radiation as well. ::giggle::
You might like Santa Fe, although I personally find it to be a real touristy spot. It seems to have lost tradition and become far too touristy.[/glow]

I was in Sante Fe in 2000 (? I think so, or 1999) and it was "Anywhere, USA" to me. Bones of something special, turned sort of homogenous and yes, touristy. Hey Jenn... did you want your text to spread out more, or have you decided you like it in a column? *heehee* Just look at the code that shows up when you hit the glow button, then go in and change that "300" to the letter "A", if you want it to spread out. ;D ;D ;D ;D
