At the end of this month Jupiter opposes Saturn, an aspect that occurs every twenty years, and has traditionally been called the Great Opposition because of its far-reaching significance. In this faceoff of the two largest planets in our solar system, Jupiter represents the future and Saturn the past. With Saturn in Libra, the part of the past that’s pulling on us is unfinished Relationship business. With Jupiter in Aries the way forward lies in daring yourself to break new ground, daring yourself to strike a clear direct path toward fulfilling some bold new vision currently brewing and bubbling in the most forward-looking part of human consciousness.
Libra is a complex sign consisting of checks and balances, the weighing of options, the subtle balancing of compromises. Aries is the simplest straightforward sign of all. This means that during the spring of 2011 we must beware getting trapped by complexity and compromise, especially in the area of relationships. If this part of your life is caught in conundrum, try simplifying by asking yourself what part of you is directing your relationships. Are you relating out of a heavy sense of duty and obligation, or coming from a deeper core place? Can you resurrect the initial spark that hooked you up in the first place or are you endlessly circulating stale forms of behavior? Is your breakthrough into new territory going to come by re-committing to a particular connection with another or walking away from it?
When your relationship to an individual, family or group becomes overly complex, it’s often a sign that you’ve gotten hooked on an illusion and are repeating the past. Aries champions your right to break away from those old behaviors and get to some clear truth on the other side. The trickiest part of this is learning when breaking out of illusion means leaving the relationship behind, or just leaving the old form of the relationship you’ve gotten caught in, to regenerate some new form of relationship. During the Great Opposition of March, 2011, which is strong enough to affect the whole year, these relationship choices and decisions go a long way, because they catalyze the whole issue of how you break away from old stuck patterns and strike a clear path forward.
On the world scene the Great Opposition is drawing international attention to our current crossroads of planetary development. Like it did in an earlier Year of the Cat* (1963) a long term imbalance of power is once again fomenting revolution. In that earlier year Martin Luther King, Jr. led a march on Washington to draw attention to the continued enslavement of an oppressed group of people in this country. Similarly, civilization’s enslavement to fossil fuels and their US-supported dictatorships is pushing the people of Arab countries to put their lives on the line now and cry out for change. Around the world more and more people are challenging the status quo and striving to find ways to live that bring us back into harmony with ourselves, each other, and the planet.
When the Past faces off the Future like this the die is cast for years to come. Energy is building at home and abroad, to draw attention to all the ways in which we cling to an obsolete form of consciousness. This heating up of pasts and futures can break us out of stuck patterns of behavior and limited ways of seeing ourselves and our world. It dares us to open our hearts and minds to the premise that something better is trying to uplift human consciousness out of the dark ages, and the future is going to be better than the past.
This spring, and the whole year of 2011, if you find yourself caught in an opposition of darkening drama, remember that the purpose of conflict is to draw your attention to ways you may be clinging to the past. When the world’s attention is captivated by the riveting drama of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, the time is right for catalyzing a bold new creative response from the pioneering part of you that knows how to invent a way through the hyper-complexities of love and politics, and get to the bright clear ground on the other side, where many fellow pioneers are pooling their talents to bring on the future.
