spaceweather.com/SOLAR ACTIVITY: There are no big spots on the sun today, but there is one very big prominence: "I got an email from a friend warning me about a super-large prominence on the sun. I rushed home from work to catch the last hour of sunlight and it was still there," says photographer Larry Alvarez of Flower Mound, Texas, on Sept. 20th. Big prominences like this one can last for days. If you have a safely-filtered solar telescope, check it out. ******************************** HARVEST MOONDOGS: When the moon is bright and the sky is filled with wispy clouds, be alert for moondogs. Miroslav Grnja and Backy Petrovac of Serbia & Montenegro photographed these two moondogs flanking the Harvest Moon on Sept. 16th: A moondog looks like a comet with a rainbow-colored head. In fact, it's a phenomenon of Earth's atmosphere, closely-related to sundogs. Ice crystals floating in cirrus clouds 5 to 10 km above the ground intercept moonbeams and bend them into a variety of shapes, not only 'dogs, but also luminous rings and pillars. Watch for them all.
