I liked this article on symbolism from a numerology website!
What is symbolism?
One answer is that symbolism is a language of the unconscious.
Symbols, and images, are the languages of the unconscious mind. When understood, our personal symbols can provide us with the guidance to resolve issues. They can also help us discover and develop our talents and potentials, and foster personal, professional and spiritual growth throughout our life span.
Symbols have a personalized meaning to us. Dreams might be considered a universal language because they often use the same symbols which exist in the dreams and mythologies of every culture; however, dreams are also a personal language in which our unconscious mind generates symbols which eloquently and elegantly portray our individual state, particularly our unique emotional reactions to a given aspect of life.
Symbolism is a dynamic language in which one image can conjure up archetypal impressions, complex or complete concepts and meanings, rather than being a structured language in which many words and/or several sentences are needed to put together an equivalent concept or meaning.
Symbolism can even hide meaning within different levels. Some spiritual groups may use symbols, which on one level mean something to the groups participants, yet portray something else to outsiders. A statement in a symbolic language could even have multiple meanings communicated at the same time to the same person.
Symbolism can even trigger physiological responses. Certain symbols can elicit the same reactions as if the object which is being seen, or imagined, was actually present. The human mind allows you to see, hear, touch, taste and smell objects, which are not present in your immediate environment.
Utilizing the power of your mind, and symbolism can allow you to tap into vast, rich, and detailed worlds. Your imagination can be a powerful ally in your overall mental, spiritual, and emotional health and growth. Various techniques and groups exist to teach people to access and use the power of the mind/body connection for healing.
Robert A. Johnson in says his book Inner Work: "The unconscious is a marvelous universe of unseen energies, forces, forms of intelligence— even distinct personalities— that live within us. It is a much larger realm than most of us realize, one that has a complete life of its own running parallel to the ordinary life we live day to day. The unconscious is the secret source of much of our thought, feeling, and behavior. It influences us in the ways that are all the more powerful because [they are] unsuspected."
